Added Comment by Vance Hawkins Dec 2006:

Dad (A. O. Hawkins) was at Schofield Barracks on Oahu, Hi, when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. He used to say he was in a chow line waiting for breakfast when the Japanese Zero's flew over and strafed them. He said some men in the chow line fell. Later he came back to the states and was cadre and trained other soldiers. Then he went to Europe and was in the Battle of the Bulge as well. He also mentioned the lack Forest, Hurtgen Forest, and the Ruhr River, but I don't know which of these were for his 3rd battle star. Wish I knew more.
